FEED THE KIDS FOOD PANTRY
In California, 58.5% of kids are on the free school lunch program. In San Diego, many schools have 99% of their children receiving breakfast, lunch and a snack during the school year. On the weekends and especially during the summer, the families often find it difficult to keep the refrigerator full and especially purchase fresh produce due to rising prices.
Last September, we began providing over 3500 meals weekly to kids at the King Chavez Primary Academy. From September 2017 thru April 2018, we have provided over 70,000 meals. We provide 35 pounds or more of fresh produce, bread and non-perishable food to each family.
On May 10, 2018, we opened a weekly Food Pantry and are now helping kids and their families from King Chavez Primary Academy, King Chavez Preparatory and Parker Elementary. Families now visit our Food Pantry and choose what food they would like to take home. The children help their parents decide!
The family and also volunteer check in is completed automated. No paper! A UCSD Global Ties Program team created an app that allows families to sign up in less than a minute and check in, in just seconds! All the information is then securely stored to maintain adequate food inventory and formulate statistics. We also contact all the families via text message with reminders to pick up food and recipes. Thank you to TextVending for sponsoring our charity! We were able to purchase [2] tablets to be used at the Food Pantry from a grant from James Anderson.
Our monthly sponsors include Attorney King Aminpour, the San Diego Food Bank, Panera Bread, Village Mill Bakery, and Albertson's. Pantry sponsors also include Swagg Seats, John R Mabee, James Anderson and Audrey Callahan Music.
Our new Food Pantry needs storage and transportation! Our goal is $30,000 for our Current Food Pantry. We would like to have Food Pantry Containers all throughout San Diego and the world!
