Here is her letter….
My name is Stephanie Muñoz, a recent graduate from the University of California, Merced. I am 22 years old from San Diego, California. In May of 2015, I received my Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a minor in Spanish. I am a first generation student not only to graduate High School, but I’ve made my family really proud by earning a four year degree from the University of California system. Graduating college was always one of my biggest dreams, and it feels so good to say I’ve finally crossed that off my list.
I am a former graduate from Toussaint Academy San Diego (TASD), a program for homeless youth at risk. I resided at TASD for four years previous to coming to college. The program was my biggest support system throughout my high school years. I was always encouraged to strive to be someone successful in life by providing me with the necessary life skills that I needed to survive out in the real world. Not having the support from my immediate family allowed me to let in a new family that provided me with all the love, support and encouragement I needed to continue to believe that I can be someone great in life.
In high school I was always involved and an active member of my community. I continued stay involved throughout my four years of college I’ve had the privilege to hold several leadership positions that have allowed me to work with diverse groups of students and make long lasting relationships, not to mention great connections. One of my favorite positions I genuinely enjoyed was being a Success Mentor. This position allowed me to serve and guide first year student’s transition from high school to college serving the students as a main resource to help adapt to a new lifestyle and community. I saw this opportunity to give back and help incoming first year students have a great experience, as I was guided by a mentor my first year of college as well.
I really made sure to have a great experience at UC Merced by taking all the opportunities that were offered to me and always going for the things that I wanted. I’m always looking for opportunities for me to grow and become a successful person. Recently, I was offered an extraordinary position to go to China for a year through Ameson Education & Cultural Exchange Foundation to teach English to elementary level students. I’m immensely excited for this new opportunity. It’s such a great transition and new chapter of my life that it feels almost surreal. I’m reaching out to It’s All About The Kids Foundation [IAATKF] to help me get to China by financially assisting me in buying my airplane ticket, it’s something that I’m struggling with at the moment and that would take big weight off my shoulders. I am a motivated person that has faced many obstacles in life, but my past doesn’t define the person who I am and becoming. I ask you for your generosity and financial assistance. I will appreciate any help I can get from the bottom of my heart. I will make sure I make the best out of this experience and I’m excited to share my experience and time in China with IAATKF.
Thank you so much in advance.
